AA Enhances Response Times with Advanced Router Technology

The AA has adopted advanced router technology from Ericsson Enterprise Wireless Solutions to enhance the connectivity of its roadside vans, helping them rescue stranded drivers more effectively and efficiently. The new system uses two SIM cards, (one main and one backup), providing better access to more 5G and 4G networks. With 98.5% connectivity, split 60% on 5G and 40% on 4G, this setup boosts the signal.

Roadside recovery patrols often face challenges when responding to calls in remote or hard-to-reach areas, where terrain and limited network coverage can cause delays and frustrations for both the patrols and the stranded drivers. Previously, the AA’s solution relied on 3G and 4G networks, which did not support the faster, more reliable 5G connectivity needed to improve rescue operations.

To address this, the AA conducted successful trials using Ericsson's R1900 router in 350 patrol vans. The router met the essential requirement of providing connectivity up to 25 meters from the vehicle, even in tough conditions. Based on the positive results, the AA extended the upgrade to its entire fleet of 2,700 patrol vehicles nationwide.

The improved connectivity has brought significant benefits, giving patrol teams real-time access to critical data such as car part locations, specific breakdown information, and accurate directions. This enables faster identification of callout locations and accelerates emergency response and repair times, ultimately leading to a smoother service for customers.

During peak demand in the summer, data from the new system revealed that each patrol experienced at least a 10% improvement in connectivity, further enhancing their operational efficiency.

Antony Hausdoerfer, Group Chief Information Officer at the AA, shared his thoughts: "Our patrols rely on every inch of their vans to deliver exceptional customer service, and ensuring fast, secure connectivity is just as crucial as the tools they carry. The rollout of Ericsson's router has resulted in significant improvements in both customer satisfaction and patrol feedback."

He added, “By upgrading the tools our patrols use, we can now rescue drivers faster and help keep them on the road. Our patrol teams are proud of the service they provide, and the best possible mobile service has been a key factor in that success.”

With this upgraded technology, the AA is well-positioned to offer even faster, more reliable roadside assistance, bringing peace of mind to drivers in need.

Activa is proud to have the AA as one of their partners, ensuring the safety of those on the road. This ethos of safeguarding drivers' wellbeing is one that Activa shares with the AA.
