Charging Electric Vehicles at Home

In a world that seems to thrive on rising costs, it's refreshing to hear that something is on the decline. Charging your electric vehicle (EV) at home has dropped by 15% this year, now standing at 24p per kWh. It’s the lowest cost for home charging since 2021.

This drop in price isn’t just a flash in the pan. Public charging prices have also followed suit, falling to an average of 78p per kWh—down from 82p at the start of the year. These drops are part of a wider trend that’s been analysed in the AllCosts report, which takes a deep dive into fuel and energy prices, helping businesses understand how these changes impact the cost of running vehicles. It's no surprise that EV owners are starting to see real savings as a result.

For those who charge at home, the savings are particularly sweet. With home charging costs now as low as 7.5p per kWh.

However, with four-in-10 homes lacking off-street parking, many potential EV owners still face the so-called ‘pavement tax’—a frustrating roadblock to electrification. This issue is one that needs to be addressed to accelerate the shift towards more sustainable transportation.

However, with more than 72,000 EV charging points across the UK according to ZapMap and new connectors coming online every 25 minutes, infrastructure is catching up. The electric revolution is happening, and while there are still hurdles, the good news is that more drivers are saving money than ever before.
