Seeing red: New flashing lights rule shines a spotlight on roadside safety

A new regulation now allows roadside assistance and recovery operators to use red flashing lights on their vehicles, alongside the traditional amber lights. This rule aims to enhance safety and visibility for those working in dangerous roadside conditions, especially on high-speed roads. The addition of red lights is expected to reduce the risk of fatal accidents by making recovery vehicles more noticeable to approaching drivers.

To implement this new feature, operators must apply for a Vehicle Special Order (VSO) through the Vehicle Certification Agency. The red flashing lights can only be used under specific conditions, such as during breakdowns or accidents. Moreover, the lights are programmed to activate only when the vehicle is either stationary or moving at a very slow pace, ensuring they are used appropriately and effectively in dangerous situations.

Operators must also complete mandatory training programs, such as those provided by the Professional Recovery Operators Safety Executive (PROSE), to ensure the proper use of the new lighting systems. This training ensures compliance with safety regulations and ensures operators are well-equipped to handle roadside hazards.

Ultimately, the introduction of red flashing lights is a significant step toward improving the safety of roadside recovery workers, potentially saving lives on the road.
