“Accidents” are possibly outdated according to National Highways

In response to mounting pressure from families which have experienced loss following road collisions, National Highways is investigating the use of words other than accident to describe such instances on its signage.

Testing is underway with focus groups and customers to find alternative words to describe road traffic incident messaging. Other terms being considered include “Incident, Collision and Crash,” which would appear on overhead gantries and on road-side signs after such an incident.

The move has been prompted by campaigners who argue that the term accident implies an inevitability of incidents which could have otherwise been avoided through drivers paying better attention on the roads. Through the wider spread use of other, more neutral, or appropriate words, it is hoped that a greater message of safety and driver responsibility will be shared.
